What Americans Believe About Sex

What Americans Believe About Sex

Research Releases in Culture & Media • January 14, 2016
From the modesty debate to the mainstreaming of “twerking,” the American public has a complex relationship with sex. Ever since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, the liberalization of social and moral attitudes toward sex has met with a conservative backlash troubled by the impact of an increasingly sexualized culture.
So what do Americans think about sex? What is its purpose, and where should we have it? And what do people think about traditional sexual ethics? Are they outdated? In a recent study, Barna Group asked about these and other questions related to sex—and discovered there is no broadly shared consensus among American adults.
Half of U.S. adults (50%) agree strongly that “choosing not to have sex outside of marriage is healthy.” But generational differences are significant. Six in 10 Elders (59%) agree strongly with this statement, compared to 53 percent of Boomers, 49 percent of Gen-Xers and 43 percent of Millennials.
Practicing Christians (72%) are almost twice as likely as adults of no faith (38%) to say that choosing not to have sex outside marriage is a healthy choice. Women (56%) are more likely than men (43%) to hold this view. Compared to those who have never been married (41%), people who are married (53%) and, somewhat surprisingly, cohabitating adults (49%) are more likely to strongly agree with the statement.
It may be that these differences of opinion spring at least in part from confusion or ambivalence about the purpose of sex. When U.S. adults are asked to choose one or more phrases from a list of options that summarizes what sex is for, not everyone agrees.
Among all American adults, the most common answers given when asked about the purpose of sex were “to express intimacy between two people who love each other (63%), “to reproduce / to have children” (60%), and to connect with another person in an enjoyable way (45%).
There are disparities, for instance, between generational cohorts. Overall, Elders and Boomers tend to share a stronger consensus about the purpose of sex. That is, clear majorities among the older generations say sex is for procreation (79% Elders; 71% Boomers), expressing intimacy between two people who love each other (68% Elders; 73% Boomers) or uniting a man and woman in marriage (62% Elders; 50% Boomers).
The two younger adult generations are much less likely to embrace these traditional views of sex. Most Gen-Xers and Millennials continue to believe conventional ideas of sex: that it is to express intimacy between two people who love each other (57% Gen-Xers; 56% Millennials) or to procreate (52% Gen-Xers; 51% Millennials). However, the notion that it should unite a man and woman in marriage is endorsed by just one-third of Xers and Millennials.
Nearly half of younger generations say that sex is to connect with another person in an enjoyable way (44% Gen-Xers; 49% Millennials), though this sentiment is not much different from older adults. Notably, Millennials are much more likely than older adults to say the purpose of sex is self-expression and personal fulfillment (41%).

Gender seems to play a role in one’s view of sex. Seven out of 10 women (69%) say the purpose of sex is to express intimacy, but a smaller majority of men, 57 percent, believe the same. Conversely, men are more likely than women to indicate sex unites a man and woman in marriage (45% men; 39% women) or satisfies a biological need other than procreation (43% men; 36% women).
Practicing Christians (56%) are more than twice as likely as those with no faith (25%) to say the purpose of sex is to unite a man and woman in marriage. At the same time, those with no faith are much more prone than practicing Christians to say sex is for connecting with another person in an enjoyable way (60% no faith; 36% practicing Christians) or for self-expression or personal fulfillment (46% no faith; 26% practicing Christians). There are also notable differences between these groups and Americans who identify with a religious faith other than Christianity. For instance, those of other faiths consider marriage as at a higher rate (32%) than the other groups (23% no faith; 15% practicing Christians), or to satisfy a biological need, (46%), comparatively (33% no faith; 32% Practicing Christians).

Traditional Sexual Ethics: Moral, Good and Unrealistic
Barna asked American adults their opinion of traditional Christian sexual ethics, which teaches “that sex should only be within a marriage between a man and a woman.” Among all adults, the top five descriptions of this phrase are “moral” (36%), “good” (28%), “healthy” (27%), “right” (27%) and “unrealistic” (22%). The rest were “anti-gay” (16%), “too strict” (13%), “repressive” (13%), “virtuous” (12%), “unenlightened” (9%), “wrong” (7%), and “damaging” (6%).
Generationally, there is again greater consensus among older adults than among younger Americans on this matter. The top five descriptions among Gen-Xers and Millennials are similar to their older counterparts, but smaller proportions share the traditional point of view on traditional Christian sexual ethics. For example, “moral” is the number-one choice of both Millennials and Elders, but the younger cohort (26%) is half as likely as their elders (51%) to choose this option. Also, Millennials were the only generational segment that had “anti-gay” (19%) in their top five, as well as the only one missing “right” (16%) from their top five.

Unsurprisingly, Christians hold more positive opinions than non-Christians when it comes to traditional Christian sexual ethics. On the other hand, adults who say they are not believers (that is, they are atheists, agnostics or unaffiliated) view the statements on Christian sexual ethics in a distinctively negative light: Just 11 percent believe traditional ethics are “moral,” and that definition ranks ninth among their preferences—the highest of all positive descriptors. Otherwise, non-believers say that such sexual ethics are unrealistic (36%), anti-gay (27%), repressive (25%), too strict (17%), or that they aren’t sure what to make of it (17%).
What’s interesting is that people who hold to faiths other than Christianity, such as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and so on, are likely to embrace a mix of favorable and unfavorable views of traditional sexual ethics. Their top five descriptors includes moral (28%), right (26%), anti-gay (24%), unrealistic (22%), and good (21%).

What the Research Means
Roxanne Stone is editor in chief at Barna Group and says that the research shows the collision of new and old attitudes about sex in society today. “The big story here is how little everyone agrees on when it comes to the purpose of sex,” says Stone. "There’s never been a shortage of conversations and cultural imagination around sex, but this current lack of consensus points to a growing ambiguity and tension over its place in society and in the individual’s life.

“Of course, the greatest divides are where you’d expect them,” notes Stone. “Between people of faith—especially Christians—and the broader population. And between younger and older generations. Whereas practicing Christians still overwhelmingly tie sex to marriage, the move among the greater U.S. population—most evidently among younger generations—is a de-linking of marriage and sex. Sex has become less a function of procreation or an expression of intimacy and more of a personal experience. To have sex is increasingly seen as a pleasurable and important element in the journey toward self-fulfillment.

"It is impossible to separate this shift from other cultural trends, most notably the delay of marriage,” continues Stone. "The age of first marriage has climbed into the late twenties for both men and women. This, dovetailing with a popular and increasingly assumed narrative of sex as a normal part of the single life, makes the case for saving sex until marriage a radical one.

“It’s important for Christian leaders to notice this shift in the framing of sex and to adjust their own conversations accordingly,” says Stone. "If sex is being viewed as an individualistic act of self-expression and personal fulfillment—then how can leaders both acknowledge the ways sex does help us grow as individuals, but also offer a counter-narrative that emphasizes the sacrificial nature of love and intimacy? If a significant (albeit decreasing) number of young adults still view sex as an avenue toward intimacy—then how can leaders celebrate that desire, while offering reasons to reserve that level of intimacy for marriage? The views toward the meaning of sex revealed in the research can help Christian leaders frame their conversations about sex toward the real perspectives and pain points Americans—especially young adults—are feeling toward the topic."

About the Research
The study on which these findings are based was conducted via online surveys from August 24 to August 26, 2015. A total of 1,000 interviews were conducted. The sample error is plus or minus 3.0 percentage points at the 95-percent confidence level. The completion rate was 71 percent.
Minimal statistical weighting was used to calibrate the sample to known population percentages in relation to demographic variables. The online study is derived from a probability panel, which means that respondents are recruited for inclusion in the research based on physical mailing addresses, not an opt-in online panel. Those randomly selected households without Internet access are provided an Internet-enabled device to complete surveys.
Generations: Millennials are the generation born between 1984 through 2002; Gen-Xers, between 1965 and 1983; Boomers, between 1946 and 1964; and Elders, in 1945 or earlier.
“Other faith” indicates respondents who self-identify with a religion other than Christianity.
“No faith” indicates respondents who self-identify as atheist or agnostic, or who are religiously unaffiliated.
“Practicing Christians” are self-identified Christians who have attended a church service in the past month and say their religious faith is very important in their life.

THE SPIRIT of LAWLESSNESS

THE SPIRIT of LAWLESSNESS
by David Wilkerson

"For the mystery of iniquity doth already work" (2 Thess 2:7).

The Greek word Paul uses for iniquity in this passage means,
literally, "lawlessness." Therefore, the mystery is one of lawlessness,
meaning that multitudes are going to act without law or restraint.

Yet, this lawlessness is not simply a rebellion against the rule of
man. It is not about rebelling against civil authority or committing
robbery, rape or murder. These things do provoke God's wrath,
but the mystery of lawlessness goes much deeper. It is an outright
rejection of the truth that is in Christ, a casting aside of God's Holy
Word and rebellion against the restraints of Scripture!

This spirit of lawlessness is rampant in our nation today. It is the
force behind the legislation that seeks to banish God from our
society and the same spirit that Satan used to deceive Eve when
he told her, in so many words, "God is easy; He won´t punish you
for disobeying. You can eat the fruit and indulge your lust and you
won´t have to pay for it!"

Today Satan is using this same lie to convince masses of believers
that they can indulge their sins without paying any penalty. It is a
demonic scheme to pervert Christ´s gospel of grace and turn it into
a message of licentiousness. Tragically, many lukewarm Christians
are succumbing to this spirit of lawlessness.

Paul says the Antichrist will rise to power because people will be
blinded and deceived by their own sin: "After the working of Satan
with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivable-
ness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received
not the love of the truth, that they might be saved"
(2 Thessalonians 2:9-10).

Satan will deceive masses of people by convincing them of a subtle
but powerful lie, just as he convinced Eve: "God doesn't punish sin!"

Paul says this deception will come "with all deceivableness . . .
because they received not the love of the truth, that they might
be saved" (verse 10). He then adds, "For this [reason] God shall
send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie" (verse 11).

The apostle is saying, "Those who refuse to obey or respect God's
Word will fall under a powerful delusion. At first they will wink at
their sin and justify it. But soon they will actively seek out a
message of easy grace. They will invent a grace that is far beyond
what God intended. His grace never leads to license-it always
leads to repentance."

HANDED OVER to DEATH DAILY

HANDED OVER to DEATH DAILY
by David Wilkerson

The godly apostle Paul was full of the Holy Spirit and revelation
knowledge. He prayed fervently and walked daily in intimate
communion with Jesus. Yet he admitted he was continually
buffeted, defamed, despised and reviled. He was gossiped about,
his character was attacked, and his name was reproached.

Paul suffered so much so often, even his spiritual children wondered
why he constantly faced trouble and persecution. Every time they
saw him, his face was bruised, his bones were broken, or his body
was covered with marks. Of course, this hurt Paul deeply. Here
was a powerful, sincere preacher of God's grace and deliverance
and everywhere he turned, he was reviled and defamed.

The apostle said he had one friend left, Onesiphorus, who "was
not ashamed of my chain [bonds]" (2 Timothy 1:16). Paul said of
his friend, "This man is not ashamed of my imprisonment. He
knows better than to think there's some hidden sin in my life!"

Paul also said he was encouraged by a group of believers who
"had compassion of me in my bonds" (Hebrews 10:34). He was
saying, "These people feel what I'm feeling." They stood by Paul
in his trials because they themselves had been "made a gazing-
stock both by reproaches and afflictions . . . whilst ye became
companions of them that were so used" (verse 33). These believers
had become the apostle's "companions in afflictions" because the
same thing that was happening to Paul had happened to them!

I know a deeply spiritual minister who endured years of satanic
buffeting and persecution from other believers. Every time I saw
him, he asked me to pray for him about his troubles. I gladly
complied but over time, as his trials persisted, I grew bothered.
Finally, I asked him point-blank: "I don't understand why you're
always so harassed. You're one of the godliest pastors I know.
You're intimate with the Lord, always in prayer, continually
studying His Word. Why would He allow you to face such
constant trouble?"

But now I understand that this godly minister was handed over to
death situations daily because he was full of resurrection life. God
wanted to use him in a mighty way so He kept handing him over
to death in every area of his life. God wanted nothing to remain
that would hinder the beautiful manifestation of Christ in him.

Satan was set on destroying Paul because he knew a great
manifestation of Christ was about to shine forth in his life!

Measure Those Who Worship

Measure Those Who Worship
(En EspaƱol)
"Then there was given me a measuring rod like a staff; and someone said, ‘Get up and measure the temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it. Leave out the court which is outside the temple and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations'" (Rev. 11:1-2).
For whatever else this verse ultimately means, it tells us that the Spirit of God is measuring worshipers. He is studying those individuals whose treasure is in Heaven and who abide in the "inner court" of God's temple.
Consider: in our world of terrors, pressures and trauma, our only refuge exists in the living presence of God. We must not accept a religion about God and assume it is the same as living in the presence of God.
If we are to truly dwell in the Divine Presence, one thing perhaps above all others will take us there: we must become true worshipers of God.
Genuine Worship
Jesus taught that "true worshipers" are those who worship "the Father in spirit and truth." In other words, their worship to God flows unhindered by difficult outward conditions. "Spirit and truth" worship is genuine worship. Indeed, right now on Planet Earth, the Father is seeking such people "to be His worshipers" (John 4: 23).
Consider well the priority of God. He isn't seeking for us to be miracle workers or great apostles and prophets. He desires more from us than the cultivation of good leadership skills or administrative strengths. What does He seek? He is seeking worshipers.
Genuine Worship Causes Us to Become Genuine Christians
If we focus on making our worship true, our Bible study, our prayer and extended service to God, whatever that may be, will also become true. Indeed, a worshiping heart floods all other spiritual disciplines with legitimacy and substance. If we bow in worship before studying God's Word, His Word will plunge more deeply into our soul; our fruit will be sweeter and more enduring. If, before we open our mouths in prayer, we honor God in worship, our intercession will ascend toward Heaven on wings of unfeigned trust and expectant faith.
Worship rescues our spiritual efforts from routine, religiosity, pride and guilt; it takes our minds completely off ourselves and burrows us into the overwhelming life of God.
We have all heard teachings that God desires to have a relationship with us, and it is true. Yes, God desires that our union with Him be wonderful. Yet His commitment to redeem and restore us has another purpose: the interaction and blessedness we experience from His presence should transform us into worshipers.
Indeed, worship is the evidence of a transformed life. Worship may be expressed with tears of joy or in silent awe; it may create an abiding gratitude toward God or inspire songs in the night. Regardless of the form of expression, the worship the Father seeks must be genuine. It turns our complete being toward God, bowing our souls to Him in love.
If, however, the idea of "worship" seems to be a strange thing, if it feels mechanical or the words expressed seem hollow (and not hallowed), it is because we have positioned ourselves in an "outer court" worship experience. You see, the closer we draw to God, the more we are transformed; the greater our transformation, the more completely we respond in worship.
Lord, come into my life and fulfill Your promise of transformation. Create praise on my lips, and help me to worship You in spirit and in truth.

God's Response to Redemptive Intercession
When Abraham was confronted with the possibility of Sodom's destruction, he did not immediately jump on the "Destroy Sodom" bandwagon; instead, he went before the Lord and prayed for mercy for the city. Abraham's prayer is an amazing study on the effect a mercy-motivated intercessor has on the heart of God. Indeed, my object here is to gaze into the heart of God as it is revealed in the discourse between the Lord and Abraham.
When we look at Abraham's prayer, we discover an amazing power granted us in intercession. And what is that? God is looking for a mercy reason that would justify Him delaying or canceling wrath. We must not belittle this principle, for in it is great hope for our land as well. The mercy reason for delay is found in the compassionate prayer of an intercessor.
Let us consider the Lord's initial response to Sodom's sin. First, He revealed to Abraham, His servant, what He was about to do. Why? Because God desired Abraham to intercede. When the Lord informed His servant of what was wrong in the world, it was not so that Abraham could simply criticize it, but so that Abraham would intercede for mercy. Remember, God delights in mercy (Mic. 7:18) and takes "no pleasure in the death of the wicked" (Ezek. 33:11). The Lord always seeks for opportunities of mercy. Therefore, let's take note of how Abraham approached the Almighty:

"Abraham came near and said, 'Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from You to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth deal justly?'" (Gen. 18:23-25).
Notice, Abraham did not pray from a place of anger. He never said, "God, it's about time You killed the perverts." There was no finger-pointing vindictiveness in Abraham's soul. Somehow we have come to believe that non-compromising Christians must also be angry. Abraham never compromised with Sodom's depraved culture, yet he was above fleshly reaction. In fact, throughout his prayer, Abraham never mentioned what was wrong in Sodom. He appealed, instead, to the mercy and integrity of the Lord.
This is vitally important for us, because Jesus said, "If you are Abraham's children, do the deeds of Abraham" (John 8:39). One of Abraham's most noteworthy deeds involved his intercessory prayer for Sodom, the most perverse city in the world!
Abraham first acknowledged the Lord's integrity, then he spoke to the Lord's mercy.
"Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will You indeed sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty?" (Gen. 18:24).
The Lord knew that it would be unjust to slay the righteous with the wicked; Abraham's prayer did not enlighten the Lord of some unknown fact. But the nature of life on earth is this: God works with man to establish the future and, in the process of determining reality, He always prepares a merciful alternative. In other words, urgent, redemptive prayer shoots straight through the mercy door and enters God's heart. This door is never shut, especially since we have a High Priest, Jesus Christ, ministering at the mercy seat in the heavens (Heb. 8:1). It is open each and every time we pray.
Listen to how the Lord answered Abraham's prayer for mercy: "If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account" (Gen. 18:26).
How the truth of God's mercy flies in the face of those so eager to judge their nation! Incredibly, the Lord said He would spare the whole of Sodom if He found fifty righteous people there. Now keep this in mind: the Hebrew word for "spare" means more than "not destroy"; it also means "to forgive or pardon." This is a tremendous revelation about the living God. He will minimize, delay, or even cancel a day of reckoning as long as Christ-inspired prayer is being offered for sinners!
Time and again throughout the Scriptures the Lord proclaims an ever present truth about His nature: He is "slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness" (Exod. 34:6). Do we believe this? Here it is, demonstrated right before our eyes in the Scriptures. He tells us plainly that a few righteous people scattered in a city can preserve that area from divine wrath.
Abraham knew the love of God. He was an intimate friend of God's. Abraham, in truth, had a clear view into the heart of God based on his own experiences. This interceding patriarch had seen the Almighty bless, prosper, and forgive him, so he pressed God's mercy toward its limits.
"What if there are forty?"
The Lord would spare it for forty.
Abraham bargained, "Thirty?"
He would spare it for thirty.
"Twenty?"
He finally secured the Lord's promise not to destroy the city if He could find just ten righteous people there. On God's scales, wrath is on one side and mercy on the other. Put the entire city of Sodom with all its sin and perversion on one side. The scales tip toward wrath as the weightiness of advanced wickedness runs rampant through an entire city. Let's assume that there were two hundred thousand evil people in Sodom. It is weighed heavily on the side of evil. Yet on the other side, place just ten righteous individuals. As the ten are placed on the scale, the spiritual weight of the righteous, with just ten, tips the scales toward mercy!
In God's heart, the substance of the righteous far outweighs the wickedness of the evil! Herein we discover what we are seeking in the heart of God through prayer: the Lord would spare (forgive) sinful Sodom, with its gangs of violent homosexuals, because of the influence of ten godly people who dwelt within it!
How About Your Community?
Now, let's think of your city: Are there ten good people among you? Consider your region. Do you think there might be one hundred praying people living within its borders, people who are pleading with God for mercy? What about nationwide? Do you suppose there might be ten thousand people interceding for your country? God said He would spare Sodom for ten righteous people. Do you think God would spare your nation for ten thousand righteous?
I lived in a metropolitan area in the United States that has about two hundred thousand people. I can list by name scores of righteous individuals, including pastors, intercessors, youth workers, black folks, white folks, Hispanic folks, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Christian business people, moms, dads, godly teenagers, praying grandmothers, secretaries, policemen, and on and on who live there -- far more than the ten righteous needed to save a place like Sodom. There are many here who care about this city.
Think about your church and the greater church community in your city. Aren't there at least ten honorable people who sincerely care about your community, who desire that God would bring revival? Remember, the Lord said He would spare Sodom for the sake of the ten.
My plea in this message is that you would see yourself as one who is standing in the gap for your city. See if there are others in your community who will pray with you. The power of prayer can release a tsunami of mercy that can topple strongholds and set captives free in your region.
Finally, let us not give up our communities to the influences of hell. God is able to raise up a standard against wickedness. In fact, He says He looks for a man who will stand in the gap, that He might not strike the earth in His wrath. Will you be that one? You see, the true measure of spirituality is not how angry we become toward sinners, but how Christlike; our mission is not to see men destroyed, but redeemed.
Lord Jesus, forgive me for devaluing the power of prayer. Forgive me for underestimating how passionately You desire to reveal Your mercy. Lord, give me grace to be one who never ceases to cry out to You for mercy. Lord, let me not base my obedience on what my eyes see or my ears hear, but upon the revelation of Your mercy; let me build my life on Thee. Amen!
